How discounted gift cards work
These aren't coupons or grey-market cards — they're real gift cards from official sources (Freecash, TopCashback and Fluz), bought at a discount or with cashback. Buy a $100 gift card and get, say, 8% back, and you've effectively paid $92 for $100 of spending. Load it, spend it as normal — same products, same shelf price at the register — you just paid less to get there.
Why gift cards beat portal cashback in-store
Cashback portals — TopCashback, Rakuten and the rest on our Shopping tab — only pay when you click through their link to a retailer's website and buy online. Walk into the physical shop and there's no link to click, so you earn nothing. A discounted gift card has no such limit: it's money in the brand's own currency, so it works at the till, in the app, online — anywhere. For in-store shopping, a gift card is the only reliable way to earn cashback.
Rule of thumb: shopping online? Compare portal cashback and gift-card cashback and take the bigger — or stack them. Shopping in-store? Buy the discounted gift card and pay with it, every time.
Stack all three rewards
Online, these don't compete — they layer on a single purchase:
| Reward | Where it comes from | Works in-store? |
|---|---|---|
| Discounted gift card | Buy the card at a discount here | Yes — anywhere |
| Portal cashback | Click through a cashback site, online | No — online only |
| Credit-card rewards | Your card issuer, on the card purchase | Yes |
Buy a discounted gift card with a rewards credit card, then spend it online through a cashback portal, and you can potentially earn three ways on one basket — as long as the portal tracks orders paid with a gift card. Some don't, so check its terms first.
The three gift-card sources compared
We pull rates from all three every day and show the best per brand. Here's how they stack up across the brands we track.
| Source | US brands | Avg rate | Wins best rate | How you buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freecash | 180 | 5.4% | 6% | In Freecash — paid as coins (→ PayPal / crypto / cards) |
| TopCashback | 361 | 6.4% | 32% | In the TopCashback gift-card store — tracks to your account |
| Fluz | 229 | 8.1% | 89% | In the Fluz app — instant e-gift, also virtual cards |
"Wins best rate" = across brands two or more sources both carry, how often each posts the highest rate.
Good to know before you buy
- Most cards are e-gift codes delivered instantly — buy right before you check out.
- Buy the amount you'll actually spend — a discount on money you never use isn't a saving.
- US gift cards generally can't expire for at least five years by law, and many never do — but check each card's terms.
- Rates move daily and by brand: the same store can be 3% one week and 12% the next.
- A few brands exclude gift-card purchases from their own promos or points — check before big buys.
- Most cards spend at the register, but confirm in-store redemption (vs online-only) for that brand.
Is buying discounted gift cards worth it?
Worth it if you…
- Shop somewhere regularly — groceries, coffee, a go-to store
- Are buying in-store, where portal cashback can't reach
- Make a big one-off purchase (electronics, furniture, travel)
- Pay with a rewards card and shop online — stack all three
Skip it if you…
- Won't spend the full amount you loaded
- Might return the item (refunds go to the gift card, not cash)
- Are chasing a one-off buy at a brand you'll never use again
Are discounted gift cards taxable?
For a normal purchase, no — buying a gift card at a discount is treated as a discount on what you buy, not income. General information, not tax advice.
Gift-card cashback FAQs
Are these legit? Where do the cards come from?
Yes — they're real gift cards from established cashback platforms (Freecash, TopCashback and Fluz), not resold or grey-market. You buy through the source and it credits the cashback.
Can I really use them in-store?
For most brands, yes — a gift card spends at the register just like cash. That's the whole point: it earns you a discount where online cashback portals can't reach. A few brands are online-only, so check the card's terms.
Do the gift cards expire?
In the US, gift cards generally can't expire for at least five years by law, and many don't expire at all. Always check the specific card's terms.
How is this different from the cashback on your Shopping tab?
Shopping cashback pays when you click a portal link and buy online. Gift-card cashback is a discount baked into money you can spend anywhere — including in-store. Online, you can often stack both.
Which source should I use?
Whichever has the highest rate for the brand you want — we show all three side by side with the best on top. It varies a lot by brand.
What if I need to return something?
Refunds are usually credited back to the gift card, not to cash — so only buy what you're confident you'll keep or spend.
